Preliminary Tasks:Front Cover Textual Analysis

In the image above we can see a man which is holding uni books in his hand. The background is black around the edges but gets lighter around the mans face and shoulders. The shot is a medium shot because in the picture only half of his body(waist upwards) is being showed. He appears to be standing up.The College masthead is behind the man , on both his right and left there some cover lines in both yellow and white. The bar code is further down the magazine towards the bottom left, the price of the magazine has also been written in small white print under the bar code. Further up the magazine cover n the right hand side there is a pink splat that stands out quite a lot because of its bright colour.

The hidden meaning behind this image is 'education is the key and it is never too late '.The man in the image is Jeffrey Assassin Campbell a dancehall artist which seems to be advertising education. He may be trying to say education in university can be fun but it comes with hard work.

The font appears to be a little modern ,this could mean that the magazine hasn't been around for a long time. The bright and bold yellow font is the main colour that stands out on the page. There are about three different styles of the same font in different sizes.

College's masthead is quite large plain and bold which allows the yellow bounce of the black/grey background. It has no outline or shadow. The font is most highly bold Arial. The name of the magazine 'COLLEGE' has been written in capital block.'COLLEGE' is the topic beause the magazine is about college/university lifestyle.

The magazine cover is of the dancehall singer Jeffrey Assassin Campbell. He is a star in the making.

Hes pose is an especially layed back one. Hes clothing and body language seems comfortable and comes across in an intellectual way.

'Dancehall's Bright Future:Jeffrey Assassin Campbell' is the name of the main cover line. It relates to the image well because the image is of Jeffrey and it is trying to say that he has a bright future in the dancehall artist genre The selection of different cover lines proposes that the the magazine has several aspects and doesn't only focus on one topic. The topics on the cover-lines are:

*The hot weather of 2008

*Campus

*Blackberry

*The joy of it being Friday

*Campus parties
Most magazines will have an element of the news and whats going on in the world. For example in this cover it related to the world of sports and how someone is trying to 'produce the world's fastest humans'.

Target Audience

Taking into account all the points i have made it is fair to say that the target audience for this magazine is university students both male and female between the ages of 18 and 24.They would most likely be living on campus or have an interest in higher education. They are also goin to be able to read.

The main prop in this image are the books. Its has been put there to signify the topic which is education and to also back up to name of the magazine 'COLLEGE'.

The lighting is high key lighting the reason for this is because the subject (the man) doesn't seem too dark or too light, it may suggest that it is in the late after-noon around 4pm.

Costume wise he has been dressed up in a manner which is smart but casual . He is wearing a white v-neck t-shirt,a smart black jacket, some jeans and a long silver chain. The costume has been made in make a connection with its target audience. The style of the costume is casual wear, which is how most university students would dress

NVC(Non-Verbal Communication

The mans non-verbal communication suggests that he is happy about learning and takes education seriously because he is smiling, his smile is not a full smile were all his teeth are showing .He's eyes are looking straight into the camera which may show confidence and a high self-esteem.

The setting is most likey to be in a studio ,the reason for this is because the background is dull and plain. It could be the wall of a corridor in the university.
